BEST IN SHOW
WAITING FOR DOBERMAN
by pat

This film is a parody of those dog shows that pre-empt pro wrestling every so often. I had no idea they were so popular until I realized that wrestling doesn't usually get pre-empted. I didn't care, because this was a partially improvised film from people responsible for such things as Spinal Tap, SCTV, Waiting For Guffman, Fernwood 2 Nite, and more. It could be about...actually, no, dog shows is pretty much at the bottom of my list of interesting things. Dogs aren't supposed to be pretty, well mannered, and able to run fast. That's why we have rich kids.

Anyway, the movie still managed to be funny. Though I am not sure I get dog show humor, I can still laugh at the funny people with the funny lines. Doesn't help that I know jack all about breeding or teeth or the like, but it didn't hurt none either. There were lots of funny parts not about dogs. Larry Miller, as usual, was friggin' hilarious. Anyway, worth renting, but if it's there, rent "Waiting for Guffman" first.

In Egypt, this film did poorly, partly due to their reverence for cats. The studio, to their credit, tried to get around this. When dubbing the film from english, they also replaced all of the barks and growls with meows and purrs. The boos this inspired were universal. Video rights for the region have not yet been secured.
