OF COMEDY

COMEDY? YES. ORIGINAL? NO.

First and foremost, let's remember what this is. A concert film of a very popular comedy tour. So the main question is, "Is it funny?" Well, yes it is. Pretty damn funny. If you want to laugh, not a bad choice. But I have to fill this review with something, so I'm going to nitpick things that are secondary to the enjoyment.

First off I will have to mention that the material was apparently not by the Original Kings of Comedy, but a series homages to them. There are riffs directly influenced, or on a few occasions lifted from, Bill Cosby, Eddie Murphy, George Carlin, Lenny Bruce, I think even some Martin Mull, but I can't be sure because I think I was stoned every time I listened to his albums. Actually, I was so gone I didn't play the record, I just put it on the carpet and layed my head against it. That is why vinyl was the golden day of comedy. You could do that with the albums you liked best, or that looked the most comfortable.

The point is they borrowed a lot. Cedric the Entertainer even went on some of the same riffs as Steve Harvey. They went in different directions, but it was a little repetitious. Also, I didn't have a "Big Momma" growing up, so this was fairly lost on me. I did not feel alienated though, because Spike showed many white people in the audience. Usually when they didn't get a joke, or were being talked about.

Okay, that seems a bit unfair in retrospect, I'm sorry. The material was never racist in the least. Of course it was discussed, but it was never anti-white, anti-black, anti-anybody. The only racism was from Spike, who having written none of the material (thank God) had to rely on his shoddy camera work. I mean, it was bad. If he could've swallowed his pride and watched someone else's movie, without bitching about something, he would have done well to check out Raw, or Bill Cosby Himself, possibly even Rattle and Hum or Stop Making Sense. Instead he has four or five "artsy angles," three cameramen by the stage, and about a hundred in the crowd showing what a crazy party this is. There were a few very visual bits that he decided to show us from behind, just like we were really there, Spike. He even added a camera trick. On a live stage performance. One that ruined the joke.Because of you NYU is now pushing their accounting program much harder.
