CUBE 2: HYPERCUBE
LAZINESS TO THE THIRD POWER
by pat

I saw this about a month ago, so it isn't really as fresh in my head as I'd like. I actually watched it when I watched the first one. Wow. Looking back, that was more than a month ago, wasn't it? Yep. I figured it would stay fresh in my mind. I still remember a fair amount, but a lot of that is spoiler stuff, so I probably should skip it. That takes away a good chunk of what I had to write about. What we're left with is a general impression of the movie, which is a big fat load of help, isn't it? It's not? Fine.

I liked this one about the same as the first one, but for different reasons. While I enjoyed the mystery of "Cube," it was neat getting some snippets of back story. Having a sense of what goes on outside, even as just a glimpse, and even though it isn't the same cube, was also neat. Had they just put more people into a repetitive situation, killed them randomly, and given us little to go on, everyone would've been bored. Same Cube, Different Die.

The effects are stepped up in this one as well, many of which don't even seem like effects. I watched the bonus goodies and was shocked to find out how much was shot without the walls there. That doesn't seem like a big deal, and narratively it isn't, and the bonus material really only would be of interest to those who like watching low-tech ingenuity in a developing technology, but it scored points with me. One of these days I'm going to come up with a spreadsheet to figure out who and what have how many points with me. I think it would be neat to know.

Without giving too much away, some of the character types in this film are pretty inventive. The guy who goes crazy is much more interesting and believable that the similar type from part one, and with some of the wonky multiple reality stuff, there are some kind of cool ideas fleshed out in ways I found very amusing. One other thing this one had over the first one: boobs. Technically that's two things, but I figured if I purposely made a mistake I had to correct, I could pad the word count. What are we at here? Oh, cool. Gotta run.
