pat I've seen other sites review this movie and give it less than stellar ratings. People are saying it was too slow, too talky, stuff like that. As the first one was called "the thinking man's action film" by quite a few people, I think it's a bit stupid to dislike this one for being full of concepts, theories, and general world-building information that sets it apart as its own unique vision. For non-fans, I can understand, but I'm seeing self-professed fans saying this. I think they are only remembering their favorite scenes in retrospect, and quite likely all of the knock-offs and one-ups that have come out since. The thing most copied about the original was the effects. It's visual, it's a series of ones and zeroes, it's easy to knock off. This one has some pretty damn spectacular effects, but it has more of what I personally loved about the original. It is a theoretical, philosophical, computer-based cautionary conspiracy theory. The world is not as we see it. We live in a computer simulation, and when things seem to follow too closely to some grand pattern or algorithm, that's just our operating environment. When things seem odd, deja vu, missing some blip out of the corner of your eye, and so on, those are glitches in the program. This time around, we get much deeper into the origins of the system, the anomalies, the patterns, the reasons, and so forth. As a computer geek, some of the concepts are just amazing. Same with the philosophy stuff, though I'm not as well versed. For this movie, despite having revolutionary new effects technology, massive setpieces, and some incredible visuals, afterwards my friends and I spent over an hour discussing everything about the plot, the meanings, the messages, and only once something flashy, mainly to point out that we hadn't been discussing that one cool shot, or that other amazing fight. There was far too much mental meat to devour to waste on something flashy. After the second time I'd seen it, I still knew a few more viewings would be necessary in order to get a solid grasp on everything given to us. That isn't to say you can't follow this. On the surface it makes enough sense for those who just want to eat popcorn and watch things explode. To those of us who actually debate the existence of the spoon, literal and theoretical, go with smart friends, and don't plan on getting home any time soon. Same for the next three times you see it. For a spoiler-filled breakdown of theories I have (which should all be shown to be bunk in a few months) check out the Crackpot Theory section. |
