MATRIX: REVOLUTIONS
SO IT ENDS, WITH A LOT OF BANG
AND A WHIMPER

by pat

To borrow an old bit, "The Matrix is revolting!" "Tell me about it!" Actually, that's a bit harsh. By the time anyone reads this, it'll come as no surprise that the third and final Matrix film has proven to be a disappointment. Some say it's absolute crap, some, like me, just a let down after the last two. Personally, I think part two is the best, but that's me. From that film, I hoped this one would continue to be as intelligent and thick with symbolism as its predecessors. It had some of those elements, bookending about an hour of big action sequences, ham-fisted character moments, and not much storytelling.

The effects are impressive, the action exciting, and with half as much we might have still been wowed. Unfortunately, you can only reveal that there are even MORE Sentinels coming in so many times before it gets old, no matter how visually impressive. You can only talk about how important Neo is to humanity for so long before you think his purpose is to be the last Hype for humanity instead of the last Hope. You can only say "Everything that begins must end" before you wonder how far from how this series was at the beginning we are, and wondering when it will end.

I will admit to really being impressed with a lot of this movie as I watched it the first time (I had to see it twice. Like it or not, I'm a geek). Still, a movie shouldn't get old the first time through. During the second time, I knew what scenes to sit and enjoy or try and decipher, and which ones I should use to catch a smoke. By viewing three of "Reloaded," I was still glued to my seat the whole time.

I would like to defend the beginning, involving the train man and the Frenchman, as this was in line with the brainy meat of part two. Same with the ending some called disappointing. The scenes may not have played in actuality as well as they could have, but as I replay them in my mind and piece together the subtext and off-screen implications, as well as elaborate on implied back-story, they work on a high enough level to satisfy me. I just can't say that as a whole I was satisfied. I was not satisfied with it as a movie unto itself, and as the finale to a series that has been blowing me out of the water for the past few years, including tie-ins like the comic and the game, that disappointment just runs so much deeper. I'm glad I saw it, if nothing else to lay this chapter in my movie-geekdom to rest.
"Okay, the next scene is wired to this switchplate labelled 'SuperEgo.'"
THE SCRIPT WAS WRITTEN TOTALLY
IN SCHEMATICS

"I need to get in! All this rain is really making me have to pee!"
THE DRESS CODE WAS STRICT AND THE LINES LONG

Of course, they break easy like most McFarlane toys.
