A FEW OTHER PEOPLE YOU MAY HAVE OVERLOOKED THAT WE'VE LOOKED OVER |

jim![]() The media loves to take pot shots at Courtney. Me, I'll take any shot at her I can get. She gets unjustly labeled a junkie, exhibitionist, profiteer, and, of course, a golddigger. Ignore the fact that when Courtney infamously met Kurt her album was outselling his two to one, everyone else does. My rigorous defense aside, let's focus on her good stuff. She blew the doors wide open for women in rock. Sure, the groundwork was laid by Joan Jett and Debbie Harry and scores of others, but it was Courtney with her "Fuck You" attitude and unflinching determination that permanently ripped down the "No Gurlz Allowed" sign outside of mainstream rock and punk. Despite her proving herself as a writer, singer and actress Courtney still fights an uphill battle for respect and recognition and I think she likes it that way. In a way, her story parallels the way women have come in to there own in every facet of society. They face countless hurdles, even including the way women can turn against each other when they see one willing to stand and fight the status quo. Not a disparaging comment against women mind you, but facts is facts, Susan B. Anthony had enemies amongst the fairer sex as well. Oops, I slipped into preacher mode again. I swear, the rest of this tribute will focus on the woman and not the politics surrounding her. Courtney's beauty wears as easily in her early riot grrrl anti-sex symbol kinderwhore dresses as she does in her current incarnation as the Versace draped, award winning, Hollywood starlet. Many scoffed when Milos Forman announced her as the female lead in THE PEOPLE VERSUS LARRY FLYNT. Those legions were silenced and silenced quickly, with her heartbreaking performance. I wait with eager anticipation as Courtney plots and plans and prepares for her next undertaking. Love her or hate her, Courtney has shaped the pop culture world we live in and only the ridiculously ignorant bother to deny that. Oh, yeah, and she's mad hot. ![]() |
