About five years ago when I was living in New York city, I met Brian
Aschinger. I studied musical theatre privately with Brian, learning
the subtleties of a genre that too often was dismissed as shallow; he
taught me it was not . He was a brilliant, talented man, well-versed in the
variants of the theatre, introducing me to obscure yet beautiful songs and
shows. He was a passionate pianist and teacher, and each lesson was a delight.
Brian decided that it would be wise for me to create a showcase for
various agents and managers, so that they would have the opportunity to see me
at my best. He had several suggestions, but one stood out for me. It was
thus that I first heard Howard Goodall's musical, Girlfriends.
Howard's show had never been produced in the United States; in fact,
his one production that was produced here, The Hired Man, was brought over
by Brian. My teacher and friend had worked with Howard in England on
Girlfriends, and hoped to do the same with this excellent production.
Unfortunately, it was not to be. Brian was ill with cancer, and our
lessons became more sporadic until they ceased because of his failing
health. Chemotherapy and radiation treatments were taking their toll
on this brilliant artist. Brian passed away on July 20, 2001.
My life has been bettered by Brian Aschinger. Through his tutelage, I
have become a performer successful in the field of musical theatre, and I
have grown in my skills. Because of my introduction to Girlfriends, I have
made contact with Howard, who is a remarkable man, equally as generous as
Brian.
It is due to Howard's generosity that this production will be mounted.
Without his kindness and his devotion to his departed friend, the
United States premiere by Sandy Spring Theatre Group and Fallen Angel
Productions would not be possible.
