The War Effort was number one priority for everyone. Rationing was the
law. You couldn't get sugar, butter, meat, coffee, chocolate and almost
everything was in shortage. My sister wore her stockings until they were
almost strings. Women used to paint their legs to look like stockings. I
liked cold cereal for breakfast. First I used brown sugar, then Caro syrup,
then some kind of sweet syrup my mom made then "lets have toast with
margarine".
Remember I said I never heard of Pearl Harbor? Ha! Guadalcanal, Tarawa,
Wake, Quadjulane, (I'm sure the spelling is way off, but there was a time
I could spell them perfectly) True, The Solomons, The Gilberts Anzio,
Tobruk, Milan, The Rhine, Leningrad, Casino, Omaha beach, Cherbourg,
and on and on and on--- 60,000,000 people and THATıS JUST A
CONSERVATIVE GUESS. We would build fire in the back lots, put a box on
top and shout "Hitlerıs house".. Two years ago I was at Dachau. I found
myself standing on a spot that was in a photograph above me and I realized
I was standing on the exact spot that Himmler had stood over 50 years ago.
I almost wretched. I felt like I was standing in Dog Shit! The feelings I grew
up with will never completely go away. World War 2 was my education, my
molding my ethic. I can not understand so much of the anti American
stands of the people of today, not when I remember the millions of
Americans who died for this country.
