1. Ed Wood

After this movie, nobody could argue the power of Depp. Nobody could say
he was that kid from Jump Street, or just a guy who picks weird movies.
He gave a performance that was pathetic yet sympathetic, inspiriring and
hopeless, funny but tragic, and all based on a real person, whose vocal
and physical characteristics he captured uncannily. Besides that, this
is also one hell of a great movie in its own right. If you haven't seen
it, you don't know Depp.
2. Edward Scissorhands

Johnny should play an Ed more often. Ed Wood is where he proved himself,
but this was where he got his foot in the door. No more requests to do
Private Resort 2, or a cameo on Booker. I hear they even offered him Lori
Petty for the night. An odd choice for a Tiger Beat cover boy, he was
unkept, grey, and covered in scars. And he probably got more play because
of it.
3. Don Juan DeMarco

Johnny' accent is so convincing in this film, my date and I marveled at
the end when he talked in a plain dialect, thinking THAT was the great
performance. And she was of Spanish descent. Only later did we realize
the masterful Depp had fooled us yet again!
4. Cry-Baby

Johnny was in Baltimore! He was right here in Baltimore! Arguably the
greatest actor of our generation, and he was right here in my small little
home town! I swoon. I think Jim nailed it on the movie itself. I just
can't believe he was RIGHT HERE!
5. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

We all know he picks odd roles, but this is one even I said "Huh?"
He plays a drugged out fat and balding middle age man suffering constantly
from hallucinations. Look at Hunter S. Thompson, look at Johnny. This
was not a choice based on any remote physical resemblance. This was all
on talent. He's got that. Lots.

1) Cry-Baby

Even John Waters himself told me I was crazy for picking this as my all
time favorite film (not just the #1 Depp flick). It's sweet, it's sarcastic,
it's the best. It remains totally involved in the strange little world
it's set in and never thinks to peak out to see if reality is looking.
2) Ed Wood

Another obvious choice if you've checked out the All Time Top Five Page.
If you haven't, do it now, dillhole. Easily Johnny's most transforming
role to date. He makes a better Ed Wood then Ed Wood did.
3) Dead Man

This film is not for the cinema lightwieghts. Only SERIOUS film lovers
admitted here. Hell, even some of them would have trouble getting through
this quirky, slow and deliberate film. Johnny is in top form and if you
can make it to the end, it's well worth the journey.
4) Benny & Joon

Robert Downey, Jr. recieved an Oscar nomination for his dead on performance
of Charlie Chaplin. However, in this odd little romantic comedy Johnny
plays at Buster Keaton almost as well as Buster Keaton did. He shows great
skill as a physical comedian and shows again that he can do anything.
5) Don Juan DeMarco

Tough call for the 5 slot on my Johnny list. "Sleepy Hollow",
"Edward Scissorhands", "Donnie Brasco"...this list
goes on and on. I settled on this one though because I feel it's a vastly
over looked film. It's usually remembered more for it's Bryan Adams ballad
then anything else. Johnny is brilliant as a mental patient who may or
may not be the great lover. Either way he holds the strange plot of the
film together, because as Johnny all ways does, he believes in what he
is doing and the truth of the role. He is so passionate and watchable
it almost makes up for having to see Marlon Brando in bed with Faye Dunaway.

1) Ed Wood

This is a good movie. Johnny Depp is in it. I saw it a couple times, cause
Jim told me it was good.
2) Donnie Brasco

I saw this
with my ex-girlfriend. It was a good movie. Johnny Depp was really good
in it. My ex-girlfriend wasn't very nice to me. We broke up. It was very
sad. But Donnie Brasco's a good movie.
3) Cry-Baby

In addition to Johnny Depp, many people are in this movie. People like
Ricki Lake, and Traci Lords, and Amy Locane. Two thirds of the female
leads have taken off their clothing on film. Ricki Lake, fortunately,
remains in the minority.
4) Edward Scissorhands

Johnny Depp was also in this movie, which was a good movie. I saw it the
same day I got Sting's "Soul Cages" album, which is a good album,
but it's kind of a downer. But then again, he wrote it about his father
who died, so he's entitled. It's not as good as "Ten Summoner's Tales,"
or "Mercury Falling," but "Soul Cages" is still good.
Johnny Depp doesn't actually have scissors on his hands, unless he's,
like, cutting stuff.
5) Nick of Time

Like other Johnny Depp movies, this movie features Johnny Depp. He plays
a mild-mannered guy whose daughter is abducted by Christopher Walken,
and who Walken will kill if Johnny doesn't kill somebody else. The moral
of the story is, if Christopher Walken abducts your daughter and threatens
to kill her if you don't kill somebody else, do what he says. I mean,
sure, Johnny didn't, and Johnny won, but that's cause Johnny's Johnny.
You're not Johnny. If you were, we'd make websites about you.
