FIVE SPIELBERG MOVIES

jim 1. SCHINDLER'S LIST
Quite simply, I consider this to be the best film ever made. Absolute perfection. 2. E.T., THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL
Following up the best movie ever, is one of my favorite movies ever. As I child I was drawn to the kid friendly story and my childhood crush (now grown up crush), Drew Barrymore. As an adult, I can rewatch the film and see the masterful work that went into it. Some people say that Spielberg doesn't make movies like this anymore. Bad news, fellas, NOBODY makes movies like this anymore. 3. INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE
I hear a lot of crap around the DSFC offices for ranking this one higher than the original, but I can't help it. I like what I like. I find this story to be the richest and the most exciting. For those of you with your panties in a bunch over RAIDERS...hold your damn horses. 4. A.I.
...and keep holding 'em! Anyone who says this movie sucks is just plain wrong. Spielberg, working from the random, unorganized notes of his departed friend, Stanley Kubrick, created a world of depth and imagination. It's the closest thing to E.T. he's made since, well, E.T., of course, this is no children's tale, but an emotionally complex story that allows you to really explore the mind and the universe of a super-robot programmed to love you forever. 5. RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK ![]() Are you happy now? Seriously, RAIDERS is an amazing film that I like more and more every time I see it. Harrison Ford is a massive star for a number of reasons, and this film (and the ensuing sequels) ranks only behind the STAR WARS TRILOGY on that list. Got to see it on the big screen again recently, the print was only so-so, but the experience was breathtaking. |
by pat The best adventure
movie of all time. I've seen it more times than I could possibly remember,
and never for a moment get bored. I see where effects have advanced over
the years, but it doesn't matter because very few times does the movie
ever date itself. Every moment, every shot, every bit of dialogue keeps
it moving, keeps it entertaining, and makes this the film that above all
else will make Steve a legend. A pulp summer read,
the novel was cheesy entertainment at best. The movie elevated it to one
of the biggest blockbusters of all time. Through the eyes of three men
who, for their own reasons, have a need to conquer the sea, the titular
Great White becomes more than an animal. It becomes an embodiment of fear,
failure, and determination to succeed. It's impossible to turn this movie
off halfway through. Simply put, it all
built up to this. Every trick he'd learned over the years, every bit of
technical know-how, every story rule, every piece of filmmaking he'd done
throughout his career prepared Spielberg to make this amazing, haunting,
powerful film. Intensely personal, it also drained him of the joy of filmmaking,
and it took (in my opinion) eight years for him to regain the magic and
wonder he once had. Screw the critics,
or the audiences who didn't bother. This movie cracks me up. It's a big,
sprawling spectacle with massive setpieces, slapstick humor, decent action,
wonderful cinematography, great music, and some truly memorable performances.
Sure, maybe it didn't all come together into the most coherent film, but
it's entertaining as hell, and I grew up on it, so there! Not the first one, but one of the finest follow-ups one could ever hope for. Unlike "Temple of Doom," this one retained the themes of religion versus science, faith, and responsibility from the original. It also recaptured the good-natured easy charm and wit. While it may not be as flawless as the original, it certainly is leaps and bounds above 95% of the other adventure films ever made. |
by AG 1. RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK
Well, fucking duh. 2. SCHINDLER'S LIST
Not necessarily the one I could watch over and over, but nonetheless, Spielberg's finest hour. Or three of them, really. For my money, this is hands-down one of the finest movies ever made. So, that should get it number one on my list, right? 3. EMPIRE OF THE SUN
Lyrical and deep, one of Spielberg's first Serious Films. Falls apart a little in the third act, but so do most of his movies. Hideously overlooked at Oscar time in 1988. Which is why I'm sure Spielberg will sleep that much better knowing that he's achieved high-ranking status here. 4. JAWS
Once again, well-fucking-duh. 5. E.T.
One of the only movies that I knee-jerk right into tears over. And if you tell anyone, I keel you!! |
