  TOP FIVE STAR WARS POSTERS
by pat

1. THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (Original Release)

I don't know nuthin bout splittin no Taun Tauns.

The poster is simply beautiful, and a callback to classic posters that I really wish we could get studios to produce, instead of headshots. This gives elements of all the things that will happen throughout the film, a still frame trailer.

2.
THE PHANTOM MENACE (Teaser)

I didn't like the building as much in the background.

Even people who weren't obsessed with Star Wars were recognizing that shadow. Those of us who were fans were drooling at the first released goodie for the new Trilogy, an epic of a young boy whose future is clear and doomed to us, but to him a vast world of possibilities.

3. EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (Special Edition)

Villains finally get their due.

This is another one I just love for the art, the design, layout, and the fact that I actually own a copy.

4. STAR WARS (One Year Anniversary)

"C'mon George, make a wish, but nothing too extravagant, like being a billionaire."

Sure, the movie had a lot of re-releases, but it didn't need them until quite some time later, and quite a few theaters just kept playing it. Had it not been out for so long, I may not have seen it nearly as many times, and it may not have twisted me into such a film fanatic. This poster celebrates that.

5. RETURN OF THE JEDI (Japan)

"Um, the weather doesn't look too good, R2. Let's get inside."
"
The droids, Artoo Deetoo and See Threepio, were always meant to be the characters guaranteed to be in the whole Star Wars epic, even when Lucas was planning on 7,8, and 9. Sure, I'm sure this poster was just cashing in on the Japanese robot obsession, but I'm glad they got their own poster anyway. A nice one, at that.

1. RETURN OF THE JEDI (Advance)

Now that Hasbro/Kenner has finally given me a blue lightsaber, I can recreate this poster in front of my mirror. Not that I ever would...when anyone was around...

This poster hung on my walls for years. It also hangs in the number two slot of my favorite posters of all time. So, that should tell you something. I think that this image is enough to encapsulate, in one picture, the whole emotion and story that the soon-to-be six part series is about. Testifying to that is the fact that the newest line of Star Wars toys uses a modified version of this subject as their card logo. It replaced a long line a successors including simply the names of the particular films, Darth Vader, Darth Maul and a combo of Vader and a young Obi-Wan Kenobi.

2. THE PHANTOM MENACE (Teaser)

"My, my, this here Anakin guy, maybe Vader someday later, now he's just a small fry." Weird Al's words have never rang more true. Except perhaps in "Christmas at Ground Zero".

Say what you will about the film, but MENACE gave us a lot of great media that symbolizes the circle that is MENACE through JEDI. This early poster perhaps caused the most excitement amongst the STAR WARS faithful. Anakin, as a young boy, walking through his home village, while, unbeknownst to him, a foreboding shadow of what he will become looms, menacing about him. The haunting image is the best argument for that annoying kid yet.

3. THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (Original Release)

So, every once in a while AG is right about something.

The best of the saga's awesome trademark montage posters. The image of Han and Leia alone is worth the price of the piece. Sure it was ripped off from GONE WITH THE WIND, but you could also view it as Lucas's tip of the hat to the classic and epic films that inspired him in making these films.

4. RETURN OF THE JEDI (Original Release)

Princess Leia in a metal bikini. The closest thing to porn we could get our hands on as ten-year-olds.

The second best of said kick-ass montage posters, it is a shame that for the prequel trilogy the artists decided to go with the more dramatically drawn line of posters. Either way, I'm thrilled they decided, that despite all the artwork used in marketing the films, they would choose one style to be a constant for all six. Again it shows respect to the loyal fans and collectors out there. I just wish they would have used this style, around since the start, over one they came up with for the Special Editions. This poster also was a stand out image of my childhood with STAR WARS.

5. STAR WARS (One Year Anniversary)

Silly party planner, the toys can neither blow out a candle nor enjoy cake.

This rare poster, which was sent out only to theaters that were still showing STAR WARS after it had been out theatrically for a solid year, is a cool representative of just what a phenomenon STAR WARS was. Instead of showing any film image, it uses the toys and a cake with only the films name. How beloved does a film have to be to pull off not only a one year theatrical run, but also, a poster that shows off how much it had been embraced in another market?

1. RETURN OF THE JEDI (Pre-release, REVENGE OF THE JEDI)

I've already mentioned on this site that a.) the artwork is awesome, and
b.) I own this rarest of rare posters. Eat that, nerds.

2. EMPIRE (Pre-release)

The silhouetted Darth Vader helmet thing is pretty righteous, you've
gotta admit. Simple, stark and moody, setting up the tone for the flick
nicely.

3. EMPIRE ("Gone with the Wind")

Some amazing vivid artwork, y'gotta admit.

4. STAR WARS (Pre-release)

Gotta love how buffed up Luke looks, and how slutty they made Princess Leia. You've gotta admire when concept art accidentally gets printed, mas produced, and hung in movie theaters across the nation.

5. RETURN OF THE JEDI (Polish release)

Eastern European poster art is friggin' fantastic, and much more expressionist than the work you find here in the states. In this case, the exploding Darth Vader head is a pretty intense visual, and well worth my applause.
